If you only follow headlines, you would think the answer is simple.
Carleton, Laval, Victoria, End of discussion.
But when you look at the last three national tournaments across both U Sports and CCAA, the picture becomes more interesting. The dominance is real. But it is not as one sided as people assume.
And that is where the debate begins.
Canadian varsity basketball is growing faster than ever, but the question remains: which programs truly dominate the court? Over the last three seasons, both U Sports and CCAA programs have proven their worth. Some are household names, while others quietly command respect.
Based on national championships, Final 4 appearances, and overall consistency, here is the A-Ranking of Canada’s top varsity men’s basketball programs (2023–2025).
The University Heavyweights
There is no question that U Sports programs have controlled the national spotlight.
Carleton Ravens -
2023 National Champions.
Still the benchmark program in Canadian university basketball. Disciplined. Experienced. Championship culture. But since 2023, they have not repeated. The standard remains high, but the field has tightened.
Laval Rouge et Or
2024 National Champions.
Structured offense. Efficient execution. They proved that Quebec programs are not just competitive, they are elite.
Victoria Vikes
2025 National Champions.
Multiple Final 4 appearances across this span. Arguably the most balanced program over the last three seasons.
If you are ranking strictly on championships and Final 4 consistency, these three programs sit at the top of university basketball. That part is not controversial.
The College Programs No One Can Ignore
Now here is where things shift. While university programs dominate media attention, CCAA programs have quietly built serious national résumés.
Humber Hawks
2025 CCAA National Champions.
Multiple recent Final 4 appearances. Consistent contender, not a one year surprise.
Humber is not just winning. They are sustaining performance.
The uncomfortable question becomes this: If Humber lined up against a U Sports semifinalist tomorrow, would the gap really be that large?
No one can answer that yet.
SAIT Trojans
2023 CCAA National Champions.
Disciplined. Physical. Tournament proven.
They do not get the same national conversation as Carleton or Laval. But over the last three years, they have delivered when it mattered.
A Combined Ranking Based on Championships and Final 4 Appearances (2023 to 2025)
This ranking is based strictly on national tournament results and consistency. Not history. Not brand size. Not media hype.

Laval Rouge et Or
